Graduate Student

Helen is a Ph.D. student in the University of Washington Department of Communication and a research assistant with the Center for Communication, Difference, and Equity (CCDE). She earned her B.S. in Communication from Arizona State University and her M.A. in Communication from the University of Washington. Helen’s research focuses on intercultural and relational communication, with particular attention to how people navigate identity, belonging, and difference in interpersonal contexts. Shaped by her experiences as an adoptee and her years of service as a U.S. Army combat medic, she brings a grounded interest in cross-cultural interaction, relational labor, and the emotional complexities of communicating across diverse social worlds. Her work is informed by critical and interpretive approaches and often uses autoethnographic methods to illuminate the personal dimensions of broader cultural and relational dynamics.
