Julia Simoes

Graduate Student

Julia is a community-engaged researcher and PhD candidate in the Department of Communication at UW. Her research examines how capacity building around dialogic communication processes can be mobilized to cultivate greater collaborative praxis and civic health across diverse community contexts. Through her work, Julia aims to meaningfully integrate research and practice to advance communication environments where shared meaning making and innovative problem solving can take place.

At the UW, Julia is a member of the Center for Communication Difference and Equity’s Health Equity Action Lab (HEAL) where she has worked as a Research Assistant supporting community-engaged projects aimed at advancing community health outcomes. She has also served as a Research Assistant for the Center for an Informed Public, contributing to work documenting the impact of abortion myths in healthcare and advocacy spaces.

Beyond the UW, Julia consults on research projects and public health initiatives aimed at building skills and knowledge around productive dialogue to advance community based violence prevention efforts. She also works with the Listen First Project, supporting organizations across the bridging divides movement in their efforts to measure, make sense of, and communicate the impact of their work.

In her free time, Julia enjoys time outside (especially on her bike), crafting with friends, and hosting backyard potlucks and elaborate dinner parties!

Research Projects

Activating Dialogue for Civic Health: Exploring Dialogic Pedagogy as a Vehicle for Advancing Community Collaboration. In this action-research project I am designing and facilitating a Community of Practice for community collaboration practitioners who are interested in integrating dialogic praxis into their organizing efforts. This project is aimed at addressing the question: How can dialogic pedagogy be mobilized to build an appreciation for, and investment in, communication practices that promote greater civic health on a systems level?
